Food for Life is a local community education group that was founded in Oregon City, Oregon in 2010 by Heidi Lessick and Brenda Thrasher.  Through personal experience, we were learning that  a whole food diet is a path to real wellness!

Meeting at church one day, Heidi & Brenda began talking and learned that each had been experiencing some severe health issues.  By trial and error and asking a lot of questions regarding medical treatments we came to the conclusion that treating the symptoms of disease was not finding and treating the cause.  We both searched for alternative methods to healing without turning to steroids, or other pharmaceuticals.  What we learned is a truth that was stated a long time ago…… the “Father of Medicine”, Hippocrates.  He said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

So, the journey began, to get rid of processed foods, sugar, artificial flavorings and colors in our diets. It was quite amazing in that as little as 2 weeks eating WHOLE FOODS we both began to feel better, more energy, less pain and fatigue and anxiety. And out of this knowledge came a purpose – to  educate others of our experience!

Our goals at Food for Life are to educate people about various health and wellness issues and food related topics. Our focus is nutrition and whole foods education through how-to demonstrations and monthly classes.

Our group meetings and food preparation demos are in the Molalla, Oregon area once a month.

Some of our topics have been:

  • How-to demos include making yogurt & cheese & lacto-fermented foods.
  • Food preservation classes - both water bath canning and pressure cooking and dehydration.
  • Probiotics:  what are they and why are they important to your health
  • Info on growing your own garden & learning to preserve the harvest
  • The use of herbs, both culinary and medicinally
  • Causes of diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, autoimmune disorders
  • Feeding children and the importance of whole foods to a growing child
  • Educate about GMO’s & CAFO’s (genetically modified food and concentrated animal feeding operations) and how it is a detriment to our health and earth.
  • Speakers have included naturopaths, farmers, nutritional therapy practitioners all based on the mission to increase nutrition and health and wellness.

Most importantly, one of our main missions has been to put the community in touch with our local farmers for healthy meat and produce. We encourage the use of grass fed, pastured and/or free range meats, & organically grown produce!   We encourage people to get to know their local farmer and to support our regional farms and businesses that support the farming community.
